(July 07, 2011, Addis Ababa, (Rigbe Yohannes)- IGAD calls on the African Union and the UN Security Council to take appropriate measures to ensure that the Eritrean government desists from its destabilization activities in the Horn of Africa.
The 18th extraordinary session of the IGAD heads of state and government held in Addis Ababa on Monday deliberated on the progress on the implementation of the Cooperative Peace Agreement (CPA) in Sudan, the current developments in Somalia, and the ill acts of the Eritrean regime.
In a communiqué issued at the end of the summit, IGAD strongly condemned the activities of the Eritrean government in destabilizing the region by supporting extremists and other subversive elements.
It called on the African Union and the UN Security Council to implement fully the existing sanctions and to impose additional ones selectively on the Eritrean Regime especially on those economic and mining sectors that the regime draws on including the Eritrean Diaspora as well as ensuring compliance with previous decisions of the UN.
About Sudan, IGAD conveys its appreciation and welcomes the recent signing of the agreement on political and security principles that would pave the way for a final settlement in the South Kordofan and Blue Nile states.
IGAD congratulated President Omar Hassan al-Bashir and first vice President Salva Kirr Mayardit for their commitment to peace as well as the people of the Sudan in deciding their collective destiny.
It commends the work of the African Union High-level Implementation Panel for Sudan for their facilitation efforts and calls upon the Panel to further continue its engagement with the parties.
IGAD calls upon the international community to keep its commitment to support the people of the Sudan by forwarding all rounded support.
Somalia was also on its agenda. IGAD welcomes the nomination and confirmation by parliament of a new prime minister for the TFG of Somalia and calls for the expeditious establishment of the cabinet as stipulated in the Kampala accord.
It directs the TFG to ensure the process of putting a new constitution within 3 months.
IGAD calls upon international organizations to urgently provide humanitarian assistance to the needy populations who are suffering from severe drought in Somalia.
