(July 19, 2011,SHARJAH, Sharjah - United Arab Emirates)- An Ethiopian woman died after she was run over by a vehicle in the Al Dradary area of Sharjah on Sunday evening.
The woman was reportedly crossing the road towards the left side of the road when she was run over.
The driver did not stop his vehicle after he hit the woman and fled. He has been arrested by police for causing the death of the pedestrian.
Police received information about the accident and immediately sent for a police patrol accompanied by an ambulance.
They found that the woman had been hurled 20 metres from the scene due to the intensity of the crash and had died on the spot.
The police identified the driver who had run away and arrested him within a few hours of the accident. He allegedly did not have a driver’s licence.
He has been detained and will be referred to the public prosecution.
Public concerned
On July 8, two Ethiopian women were hit by a car near Ansar Mall in Sharjah, causing residents to voice the need for more pedestrian bridges in areas where such accidents are more common.
Ansar Mall, Al Nahda near the Ring Road bridge, Al Khan Bridge interchange are some of the areas that they identified that have no pedestrian bridges or underpasses in sight.

So many people have died in such accidents and there is a dire need for action, one Sharjah resident, Ismail Luwagga, had pointed out.
