Hilary Clinton congratulates Meles on making Ethiopia join fast-tracking economies

(June 16, 2011, Addis Ababa, ERTA)--It was in Ethiopia on Monday that US Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton culminated her African tour.

During her stay in Addis Ababa, Mrs. Clinton held extended talks with Prime Minister Meles Zenawi. Foreign and Deputy Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn briefed ERTA on Wednesday as regards the discussions held between Meles and Clinton.

According to Hailemariam, during their discussions the Meles and Clinton cherished the improvement of Ethio-US bilateral cooperation in health, education and agriculture sectors.

Ethiopia’s success story especially in the health sector is indicative of the thriving relations between the two sides, Mrs. Clinton noted. She congratulated Meles on making Ethiopia join fast tracking economies.

Trade and Investment should be focal areas of future cooperation between the US and Ethiopia, she said. The two officials acknowledge the creation of a better understanding of Ethiopian politics since the establishment two years ago of the Ethio-US joint forum on democracy and good governance.

As regards the Nile, Mrs. Clinton said America supports Ethiopia’s effort to work closely and equitably utilize the Nile waters with other riparian countries. She expressed the keen interest of the US to back Ethiopia’s commendable progress in development and good governance sectors.

She also lauded Ethiopia’s leading role in maintaining regional peace and stability. The two sides agreed to work together in mobilizing the international community towards consolidating the relative peace gained in Somalia. Mrs.Clinton was supposed to visit US-backed development activities in Addis Ababa, Hailemariam said.

However, she was forced to leave earlier because of fear the ash cloud that was caused by the volcanic eruption in Southern Eritrea bordering Ethiopia could obstruct her flight back home. Otherwise, her stay in Addis Ababa was fruitful, Hailemariam said.
