Institute working to set up internationally credited measurement organ

(25 May 2011, Addis Ababa)- The National Measurement Institute (NMI) of Ethiopia says it is working to set up an internationally accredited body that can provide efficient measurement service to the country’s industry and business sectors.

The Institute on Wednesday presented its nine-month performance report to the Science, Communications and Technology Affairs Standing Committee with the House of People’s Representatives (HPR).

Presenting the report, NMI director General, Wondwosen Fiseha said measurement and industry are directly interrelated.

Hence, he said, NMI is undertaking various activities that would make it go with the burgeoning industry sector of the country.

Accordingly, the Institute is offering capacity building trainings and technical assistances to governmental and nongovernmental actors in the sector, he said.

Modules have already been prepared to incorporate measurement in the national curriculum and provide it at first-degree level.

The Institute has submitted its quality management system to an international certifying agency claiming ISO 17025 in volume and pressure measurement.

After hearing the report, the Standing Committee urged NMI to materialize its objective as soon as possible.
