USAID assists efforts to boost farmers’ productivity

Mekele, April 6, 2011 (Mekele,ENA) - Ministry of Agriculture, Tigray State and USAID here on Wednesday signed a grant agreement amounting to 1.6 million US dollars.

USAID signed the agreement with Ministry of Agriculture, Agriculture and Food Security bureaus as well as Farmers' Cooperative Agency of the State.

On the occasion, USAID Country Representative for Ethiopia, Stanly Kuehn said that the finance will help increase the productivity of poor farmers in Amhara, Oromia and Tigray states.

According to Kuehn, 60 percent of the grant will go to improve the production of farmers in Tigray State.

Kuehn said the finance will help expand irrigation schemes, provision of loan and technology transfer , among others.

State Agriculture Bureau Head, Mezgebe Tsegaye on his part said the finance will assist the state to improve the production of the farmers by two-fold.
