(April 19, 2011, Axum, ENA)--The construction of modern Museum in the premise of Church of St. Mary of Zion , Axum, in Tigray State was launched.
While unveiling the design of the Museum to the faithful on Monday Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church (EOC), Abune Paulos said the museum would preserve the historical and antiquities of church. The three-storey Museum, which would be completed after two years, is expected to cost 160 million birr, he said.
Abune Paulos said the Ethiopian Orthodox Church's Holy Synod has already allocated some 33 million birr for the construction. The treasures include crowns, gold and brass crosses, ancient parched books and manuscripts and clothings, among others.
The patriarch called on the Christian faithful and donors to contribute their share for the construction of the museum. The 17th-century oldChurch of St. Mary of Zion is one of sacred destination of tourists.
