Sudan Foreign Minister Ali Karti in Ethiopia

Khartoum - Sudan's Foreign Minister Ali Karti, heading a Sudanese delegation, met with Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi on Thursday in Addis Ababa.

The two sides conferred on the current situation in Sudan and other bilateral issues.

Zenawi said Ethiopia would extend support to Sudan as his country is keen to see a peaceful and stable Sudan. His country will remain firm in its support for the peaceful conclusion of South Sudan’s post-referendum process, he added.

Ethiopia, along with other partners, will carry on playing major role in the Sudanese peace process, according to Zenawi.

He stressed that the Ethiopian government will commit to closely work with the government and people of Sudan in ensuring lasting peace. He said peace in Sudan means not only to Sudanese but also to the whole region.

The two neighbors expressed commitment to work together through their joint commission for the successful completion of Sudan’s peace process.

Ali Karti told Zenawi during discussions that the South Sudan post-referendum process is well underway as per the agreement.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Dr. Jean Ping also met in his office at AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa the Foreign Minister of Sudan, Ali Karti, who briefed him on the latest developments in Sudan, including Darfur and post-referendum issues.

The two also discussed the recent developments in the African continent, especially the Libyan crisis, besides the AU role in resolving Darfur issue and the CPA implementation.

Ali Karti further expressed the renewed commitment of the Sudanese Government to do everything in its power to facilitate the work of the United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) and the African Union High-Level Implementation Panel (AUHIP), led by Former South African President, Thabo Mbeki.

With regard to Darfur, Ping reaffirmed the AU’s support for the ongoing preparations by the AUHIP and UNAMID to launch an inclusive Darfur Political Process (DPP) and emphasized the need for the Government of Sudan to ensure an enabling environment for the success of the process.
