PM inaugurates “hortiflora” trade exhibition

Addis Ababa, March 23, 2011 (Addis Ababa) - Prime Minister Meles Zenawi opened here on Wednesday the 4th “Hortiflora Ethiopia 2011”, an international floriculture and horticulture exhibition organized by The Ethiopian Horticulture Producers Exporters Association (EHPEA).
EHPEA Chairperson, Tsegaye Abebe said on the occasion that the revenue that the country secures from the sector has been increasing by 25 percent beginning from the last two years.

He said the country is expected to secure about 190 million US dollars in 2011 which will show a 25 percent growth rate against last year.

Tsegaye has singled out making available adequate land for flower farms in different regions as one of the efforts being made by the government presently to increase the area of flower farms to 3000 hectares from the existing 1600 hectares.

Ethiopian Horticulture Development Agency General-Director, Hailesilassie Tekie on his part said the conducive investment policy and the incentives being provided by the government is attracting more local and foreign investors to inject billions of Birr in the sector.

He said the number of investors involved in the cultivation of flower has increased now to 90 from only five a decade ago.

The director said government will continue working with the investors engaged in the sector with a view to increasing the revenue secured from the sector.
Some 150 companies drawn from 30 countries across the world are displaying their products in the three-day exhibition.

Companies engaged in the floriculture and horticulture sector as well as suppliers of logistic, communication and other technologies, among others, are participating in the exhibition.

The exhibition is expected to be visited by more than 7,000 local and about 600 foreigners.
