Ethiopia: Nation to construct 600 hospitals in 5 years: Ministry

Addis Ababa, March 20, 2011 (Addis Ababa) Some 600 hospitals will be constructed in the country in the coming five years with a view to increasing access for health service and meeting the MDGs, the Ministry of Health said.

In an exclusive interview with ENA Ministry Public Relations and Communication Officer, Asfawesen Mekonen said constructing hospitals is one of the activities launched by the government to achieve health sector MDGs.

The construction of 30 hospitals is underway in Amhara State, he said and adding, Oromia States has also started constructing hospitals.

The officer said the construction of health posts is also underway as planned to have each in 15,000 kebeles across the country.

The construction of over 14,300 health posts have already finalized, he said and adding, construction of the rest of the health posts is expected to be completed until the end of this Ethiopian budget year.

The officer said some 35,000 health extension workers are providing door to door health service to the public with a view to attaining MDGs- reducing maternal and child mortality.
