(Feb 05, 2011, Tennessee)- Bonnie Appetit comes out of retirement for a quick bite:
A routine trip to Holy Land Market yielded an unexpected culinary delight: next-door neighbor Gosh Ethiopian Restaurant had it's "soft-opening" today! The place is unassuming (it's at 3609 Sutherland Ave. but there's no sign yet), yet friendly, warm, inviting (in a clean, brightly lit place kind of way)--and, to the jaded palate, totally invigorating.
Our little family wandered in to check it out--and feast on the Vegetarian Combination, a ginormous sampler platter of the restaurant's vegetarian fare.
It came with generous servings of Kik Alicha (mild yellow split peas in curry), Yemisir Alicha (red lentils in a slightly spicier curry), Tikil Gomen (sautéed cabbage), Gomen (fantastic collard greens), and Shurro Wot (a kind of spicy African hummus, with spicy berbere sauce)...plus a mixed green salad. For $11.99.
Altogether, it was filling and fantastic--and even our four-year-old liked it (or at least the concept of eating your plate).
If you're not hip to the Ethiopian food scene (I wasn't), you may be surprised that there are no utensils in the place. Rather, the food is served with classic teff-based injera bread to scoop everything up with--in fact, it's all served on a piece of injera, so even the plate is edible.
Injera is weirdly delish--a huge disk of flatbread with a totally spongy texture and a slightly sourdough-like flavor.
Don't worry if you don't know what to order or what you're doing--the owner, Tariku, is super-friendly, and happy to help. Go in with an open mind (and mouth), and let yourself be carried away.
Or grab your food to go, and figure it all out at home. Either way, you'll love it. Gosh is a welcome, long-awaited addition to theKnoxville dining scene.
