A knee injury has forced Haile Gebrselassie to pull out of Sunday's Tokyo Marathon, which would have been his 'comeback' race.
The Ethiopian tearfully announced his retirement from athletics in November after pulling up in the New York Marathon but reversed his decision soon afterwards. The race would have been the 37-year-old's first outing over 26.2 miles since New York but a fall in training has ruled him out.
Gebrselassie said: "I am really disappointed that I've had to withdraw as I was feeling great. I fell while training in the Ethiopian countryside. That happens often but this time my knee hit a stone. It's bad, bad luck for me."
Gebrselassie, who has set 27 world records in his career, was considered one of the favourites for the race.
