As the first large-scale sports event of the new year 2011, the 9th annual Xiamen International Marathon kicked off on 8:00 a.m. Sunday morning.
This year saw a participation of more than 60,000 runners in the various events on the day, which included the Marathon, Half Marathon, and 10KM and 5KM races as well. 26-year-old Kenyan Robert Kipkorir Kipchumba won the men's race in 2:08:07, broke the current course record. The women's race was won by Ethiopian, Amane Gobena Gemeda, who finished in 2:31:49.
The second runner up in the 42-km Xiamen International Marathon's men's race is Mesfin Hailu Lemma of Ethiopia with the time of 2:09:45. Alemitu Abera of Ethiopia stood second in women's race with the time of 2:31:54.
