Ethiopians dominate Mumbai Marathon


Mumbai, Jan 16 (IBNS) Ethiopians stole the show in the eighth Mumbai Marathon where nearly 38,000 people, including some prominent Mumbai celebrities and business magnets, participated on Sunday like every year.
Ethiopian Koren Yal won the 42-km full run among women while Girima Assefa of the same African nation was the winner in the men's category in the Standard Chartered sponsored event.
Assefa finished the 42.195-km course from Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus to Bandra and back in a record 2 hours, 9 minutes and 54 seconds.
Assefa was followed by Botor Segaye Wolde, also of Ethiopia, who completed three seconds late. Kenya's Patrick Muriuki was third clocking the distance in 2:10:00s.
From India, B.C. Tilak clocked a record one hour and four minutes to finish first in the 21-km half marathon.
From business tycoons and actors to common Mumbaikers, thousands ran for Mumbai on Sunday.
"Today is a day in which Mumbai runs without discrimination," said Rahul Bose, actor while fellow Bollywood participants were upbeat too .
"I think you should run for yourself," said Gul Panag.
Actor Vidya Balan threw a challenge to run 21 km next year.
Writer Shobha De said Mumbai Marathon is one where she can run and not for a medal.
Anil Ambani was one of the prominent businessmen who ran in Mumbai Marathon like most years.
The Mumbai Marathon is an annual international road running competition that is held in January.
This event was first staged in 2004.
Highlights of 2011 Mumbai Marathon:
Cathy Freeman is Event Ambassador.
Separate start for half marathon.
A total of 38,400 runners registered for the event.
Increased prize money of USD 325,000.
IAAF Gold Label status to the event, the highest recognition of organizational excellence for a road race.
