77 Ethiopian and Eritrean migrants rescued in Italy

(Mar 12, 2013,(Al Qarra English))--The Italian coastguard reported that they had rescued 77 migrants during the night in the Strait of Sicily. Rescuers said they received a distress signal when the boat was 145 miles south-east of the island of Lampedusa.



The 10-meter long boat filled with migrants from Ethiopia and Eritrea was towed to the island of Lampedusa. Italy is a country strongly affected by illegal immigration, mainly from migrants arriving by sea into southern Europe. Clandestine travel in makeshift boats has resulted in thousands of deaths.
