Ethiopian Man arrested for bank robbery, kidnapping

(Feb 03, 2013, EVERETT)--Wash. -- The Tacoma Police Department has arrested the 20-year-old man suspected of kidnapping an Everett Community College student at gunpoint and forcing her to act as a getaway driver during a bank robbery last week.

Everett Police Department Major Crimes detectives identified Bereket Piatt as the suspect through an investigation and tips. Piatt was arrested by Tacoma police at 11:30 a.m. Thursday. He is being booked into Snohomish County Jail.

According to police, Piatt abducted the female student Jan. 23 outside Everett Community College at gunpoint. 

He forced her to drive him to numerous locations, including the Wells Fargo on Broad Street he is accused of robbing, and threatened to kill her if she didn't go along with it, according to police.

Piatt is himself a former Everett Community College student, last attending in March 2012. He is originally from Ethiopia and was raised by a foster family. He won a state cross-country championship while attending Port Townsend High School.
