(Aug 16, 2012, Addis Ababa)--Ethiopia’s Olympic team arrived in Addis Ababa this morning basking in the glory of 3 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze medals from the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Team Ethiopia was welcomed at Addis Ababa’s Bole International Airport by the Speaker of the House of Federation, Kassa Teklebirhan, and by the Commissioner of Sports, Abdisa Yadeta. A special program dedicated to Team Ethiopia has been arranged to celebrate their victories as the city welcomes the athletes.
Ethiopia finished 25th in the London Olympics’ medal table, and second in Africa. Tirunesh Dibaba won the gold medal in the women’s 10,000 meters and took bronze in the women’s 5,000 meters. Meseret Defar won the gold medal in the women’s 5000 meters.
Tiki Gelana took the gold medal in a stunning victory in the women’s Marathon. In his first Olympic games, Dejen Gebremeskel also won a silver medal in the men’s 5000 meters. Sophia Assefa, in women’s 3,000 meter steeplechase and Tariku Bekele in the men’s 10,000 meters also took bronze medals.
