(June 27, 2012, Addis Ababa)--The 67th anniversary of Ethiopia’s membership of the United Nations was marked in Addis Ababa on Tuesday by an event held at the UN conference Center.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hailemariam Desalegn, government officials, dignitaries and employees and representatives of UN agencies participated.
Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Prime Minister Hailemariam said Ethiopia was set to further strengthen its already notable role within the United Nations.
It was committed among other things to step up its contributions to UN activities in the areas of peacekeeping and in mitigation of climate change. Ethiopia, he noted, was among the very few African members who negotiated the UN charter in 1945 in the wake of the Second World War and the foundation of the organization.
Since then, Ethiopia has been known for its strict adherence to the principles of collective security and for the active participation it has taken in UN peace keeping missions since the time of the Korean War. Ethiopian peace keepers have played an immense role in Rwanda, Burundi, Liberia and in Sudan.
Apart from its peacekeeping activity, since the early days of its membership Ethiopia played a key role in the UN in helping the struggle for decolonization of the many African countries languishing under the yoke of colonialism in the 1950s and 1960s.
