Nation celebrates 71st National Victory Day

(May 5, 2012 (Addis Ababa)--The 71st National Victory Day was celebrated on Saturday to commemorate the victory of the nation against the invading army of Fascist Italy. The Speaker of the House of Peoples Representatives Abadulla Gemeda on the occasion laid a wreath under the Victory Monument at Arat Kilo area. 

The Speaker on the occasion said the nation should be resolute to fight against poverty and backwardness. The celebration is one of the events commemorating the gallant and historic victory of forefathers against invaders.

He called on citizens to fight against poverty through contributing share for the realization of the national vision to be one of middle income countries. Abadulla said the victory of Adwa was a huge event and still it is in the minds of Ethiopians and Africans The Speaker urges the youth to be peace patriots in the effort to build development and democracy.

Ancient Ethiopia Patriots’ Association Vice President, Workneh Tegegn on his part said the celebration is so unique as it coincides the first year anniversary of ground breaking ceremony of the Ethiopian Grand Renaissance Dam. The celebration aimed at popularizing the gallant history to hand over the shining victory to generation to generation.

Members of the association and employees have contributed more than 189,000 birr for construction of the Dam. Youngsters Henok Dessalegn and Hite Woldemedhin on their part said they vowed to fight against poverty as forefather fought to safeguard the country.

Government officials, ambassadors, residents of the city including students, patriots and other segments of society also participated in the event. Seventy one years ago the armies of Fascist Italy invaded Ethiopia for the second time. 

Ethiopia was able to defeat Fascist Italy that crossed its boundaries for the purpose of colonization. On March 2, 1896, Ethiopia under the leadership of Emperor Menelik II, defeated Fascist Italy in Adwa.
