Ethiopian PM Says Eritrea Bent On Destabilising Horn Of Africa

(April 18, ADDIS ABABA,(BERNAMA-NNN-ENA)--Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi says the Eritrean government has continued its subversive activities bent on destabilizing Ethiopia and other countries in the Horn of Africa.

Responding to questions during the 25th regular session of the House of Peoples' Representatives here Tuesday, he said the government of Eritrea recently kidnapped some 100 Ethiopian youth engaged in gold exploration in northwestern Ethiopia.

Similarly, it had kidnapped and killed foreign tourists visiting the Afar Regional State in the northeastern part of the country. Meles said the Ethiopian government had been carefully monitoring the destructive acts being carried out directly by the government of Eritrea and also through its mercenaries.

The Ethiopian government has put in place different strategies to find a peaceful solution to the problem although the Eritrean government's position was not to negotiate but to impose its interests on Ethiopia.

Similarly, elders exerted utmost efforts to find a solution to the problem but the attempt failed because of the rigid stance of the government of Eritrea. Therefore, the Ethiopian government has launched appropriate counter-attacks to stop Eritrea from its ongoing destructive acts.

Ethiopia and Eritrea will not enter into war because the Eritrean government is not capable to fight a war although it wants to do so. In this regard, from now on, the Eritrean government will follow a strategy to destabilize the area given its capacity limitations.

Meanwhile, the Ethiopian defence force sent to Somalia to support the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) of that country had registered commendable results. Meles said the defence force had liberated many towns from control of the al-Shabaab Islamist militia.

The defence force will return home in the near future after handing over the Beledweyne Town to Djibouti's troops and also the Baidoa Town to Ugandan and Burundian defence forces in the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), he said.
