(Dec. 20, 2011, The Ttennessean)--A group of Ethiopian-born taxi drivers won approval today to start their own cab company, but it wasn't quite a go-ahead.
The Metro Transportation Licensing Commission approved the application by Volunteer Taxi, a group of 61 drivers - many of them U.S. citizens - who want the first driver-owned cab company in Nashville so they can lower their own costs and lead better lives. But the commission made the approval contingent on a budget increase needed to hire more taxi inspectors.
The next Metro budget year doesn't start until July 1. "It's going to be six more months before we know what's going on," said Del Ambaw, one of the organizers of Volunteer Taxi.
The commission also approved another application to start a company called Green Cab and rejected one for a group proposing to start Greenlight Taxi.
