(December 12, 2011, DUBAI)--The Dubai Criminal Court on Sunday sentenced IAA, 24, an Ethiopian, to six months behind bars, to be followed by deportation after being convicted of assaulting an Indian LS, 49 and snatching Dhs80,000 from him.
According to prosecution records, the incident happened on March 29 in Deira. The money had been transferred to the victim from Iran. The victim together with pedestrians and a security patrol managed to arrest IAA. The victim said that he was on the road after collecting Dhs80,000 from a money exchange centre in Murshid Market of Dubai when he encountered a group of Africans.
One of them “knocked me down from the right hand side and kicked my left calf then he ran away." I stood up, checking my pockets, and realised that the money was missing,” he testified, adding that he tried to run after them crying for help.
An officer from Naif Police Station, Mohammed Yasir, who was in charge of the patrol, said that together with his colleague, they came across a crowd chasing the accused along Sabkha Road. “We stepped out and detained him.”
He noted that after the arrest, the accused tried to deceive police officers saying he did not know why he was being chased. It was at this time that the victim arrived and identified him as a thief. Meanwhile, an Ethiopian visitor has been accused of robbery besides trying to strangle his victim.
The suspect allegedly hired a car and connived with his accomplices to abduct an Indian worker and snatch his possessions, which included Dhs3,000 in cash. On his way to Sharjah, the Indian victim SA, aged 38, was picked up from Al Qusais on July 15 by four people, among whom was the accused LA, aged 34.
