Ethiopian housemaid denies newborn's murder

(Nov 8, 2011,Ras Al Khaimah, UAE)-- A mother charged with murdering her newborn baby has claimed she had a miscarriage and did not kill her boy. However Ras Al Khaimah Public Prosecution has charged the Ethiopian housemaid with murder after a forensic report confirmed that the baby was killed before being thrown down a rubbish chute.

Police said the baby had been conceived through an illegal affair and therefore the woman has also been charged with having illegal sex.

Chief of police operations at Ras Al Khaimah Police, Brigadier Abdullah Khamis Al Hadidi, said: “The maid denied killing her child claiming that the baby died as a result of a miscarriage. She said she had fallen down a staircase.”

Police said the maid told them she then put the foetus into a bag put it down the rubbish chute.
The baby’s body was found by rubbish collectors last Saturday at a residential building in Ras Al Khaimah City.

Tests were carried out on the body by doctors who found the baby had been killed within a few hours of being born. Police investigations revealed the maid had been working for an Egyptian family in a flat in the same building.

The maid was arrested in Sharjah a couple of hours after police found the baby’s body. Al Hadidi said the housemaid confessed to officers that she had become pregnant through an illegal affair with a man while she was employed in another emirate.

She had absconded from her sponsor and then found work in Ras Al Khaimah with the Egyptian family.
The maid told police that one of her friends had helped her find work with the family. Police said they also arrested the person who had allegedly helped the maid get the job with the Egyptian family.
