Allowing taxi cooperative would be fair, fulfill a need

(Nov. 29, 2011,The Tennessean)--It is clear that the Ethiopian taxi drivers have been working extremely hard (“American dream eludes taxi drivers,” Nov. 27).

The existing taxi companies don’t need to talk down to them since they know what they have been doing for years. They have been working 16-hour days because it has been difficult for the drivers to make a living from the existing companies.

The 61 drivers who organized Volunteer Taxis, a cooperative, are trying to get a fair chance to improve their living standards. There seem to be many excuses for preventing the foreign-born drivers from entering a fair, free market. I think that making for a free market would represent the American way.

The Metro Transportation Licensing Commission and others need to correct their ways because Nashville has need of more taxi drivers. Not all the taxi income has to benefit the multimillionaire owners of the existing companies.
