(ADDIS ABABA, Oct 24 (BERNAMA-NNN-ENA)--The University of South Africa in Ethiopia (UNISA-Ethiopia) here has graduated its first batch pf 94 Ethiopian students who have completed their undergraduate and post-graduate studies.
Of the total graduates, 73 per cent were students who graduated with Masters and doctoral degrees. Speaking at the graduation here Sunday, Ethiopian President Girma Woldegiorgis said UNISA was one of the partners currently engaged in assisting Ethiopia in the realization of its plans.
The president said the fresh graduates were the result and testimony of these endeavours.He said the existing relations was also the manifestation of the strong bonds between the peoples and governments of the two countries.
The government was committed to supporting the efforts of UNISA in producing skilled human resources in the country, President Girma added. The government's goal in the higher education sector was to develop highly qualified, motivated and innovative human resources.
Producing and transferring advanced and relevant knowledge for socio-economic development and poverty reduction with a view to turning Ethiopia into a middle-income country within a short period was also an objective of the government, the president said.
Following the setting of policies and strategies to promote the sector, the number of tertiary level institutions had been gradually rising and the president said the number of universities in the country had reached 22 from only three just two decades ago.
Efforts are underway to increase the number of higher education institutions to 31, President Girma said, adding that the government was working toward a balanced distribution of higher education opportunities throughout the country, in particular in science and technology sector.
The UNISA Regional Learning Centre was established in Ethiopia on Aug 4, 2006, following negotiations between the governments of Ethiopia and South Africa to assist the Ethiopian government in its efforts at capacity-building human resource development.
