(Aug 15 2011, Chronicle Live.co.uk) --TYNESIDE-based Ethiopian, Yared Hagos, was in devastating form in yesterday’s Sherwoods Chevrolet Darlington 10k, smashing the course record by 20 seconds.
Now living in Newcastle after moving from Yorkshire where he competed in the Bradford Airedale colours, Hagos covered the two-lap course in 30 minutes six seconds, dipping inside Martin Scaife’s record set six years ago.
In a record field of 1,100 finishers, Hagos added a nice bonus of £150 for breaking the course record to the £125 for winning the race.
The 30-year-old, set out his stall from the off, quickly opening up a lead of 20 metres inside the first kilometre which he covered in 2min 56secs.
By the half-way point reached in 14:55, his lead had increased to 100 metres with Sunderland’s recent North Eastern Counties 5k silver medallist, Mark Hood, cutting a lone furrow in second place.
Hagos kept up the relentless pace, knocking out sub-three minute kilometres all the way to the finish.
“Since winning the Morpeth race I’ve focussed and trained hard for this 10k in Darlington,” said Hagos, who hopes to make his debut in the Great North Run next month. Read More from ChronicleLive.co.uk »
