(August, 07, 2011, Addis Ababa, ERTA NEWS)- Eritrea’s request to rejoin the East African regional bloc IGAD would be decided by member states, IGAD office disclosed.

Head of the regional bloc office, Mahboub Maalim said whether or not to allow Eritrea to rejoin the bloc is decided by the member states and charter of the institution.

He said while considering the request the report disclosed by the UN on Eritrea that shows its involvement in terrorist acts and thereby destabilize the region, and former sanctions by the organization would be taken into account.

A UN report had recently exposed Eritrea’s plot to attack African Union meeting and civilians in Addis Ababa last January. The report also made clear that Eritrea, sanctioned by the UN for its support of the Al- Qaeda linked Alshabab of Somalia, is involving in activities that are threat to the peace of the region in Uganda, South Sudan and Kenya.

The UN is considering on what to be done next regarding terrorist acts of Eritrea. Analysts say the request of Eritrea to rejoin IGAD is aimed at averting the sanctions against the state.
