(July 15, 2011, (Worcester, South Africa))--At least 14 people were arrested outside Worcester on Friday for the illegal possession of the narcotic plant khat.
Police stopped the two suspects who were travelling in what they say was a suspicious looking minibus taxi on the R101. Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered nearly 200 bunches of khat hidden inside a suitcase.
The police’s November Filander said the group of African immigrants was en route to Cape Town from Johannesburg. “The estimated value of the khat is R10,000. After no one came forward to claim ownership of this suitcase the police members then arrested all occupants inside the vehicle.
The 14 suspects between 21 years old and 45 years old are due to appear in the Worcester Magistrate's Court on Monday,” he said. Often mistaken for a shrub, khat which originated in Ethiopia, has amphetamine-type properties.
