MoT bars export of peas, lentils indefinitely

(May 21, 2011, Addis Ababa)- Ethiopia has been trying hard to diversify its export items; this has enabled the nation to secure around 2 billion USD from the sector last year.

While the endeavor is quite commendable, the condition is creating scarcity of some staple food items locally.

Cognizant of this, the Ministry of Trade (MoT) has imposed a ban on export of peas and lentils for indefinite period as of Friday 20 may 2011.

The ban was effected with a view to addressing deficiency of the products locally.

It is to recalled that MoT had earlier banned the export of similar items including wheat, teff, maize and sorghum.
