Conflicts in Africa top agenda in Ethiopia meeting

(May 21, 2011, Addis Ababa)- This year’s Joint Consultative meeting between the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) and the UN Security Council has commenced in Addis Ababa.

The annual meeting will deliberate on and review security situations in Libya, Cote d’Ivoire, Sudan and Somalia.

The meeting would be co-chaired by Mr Lungile Pepani, the South African Ambassador and the Permanent Representative to the AU and Mr Gerard Araud, the French Ambassador to the UN.

Declaring the meeting open, Mr Ramtane Lamamra, the AU Commissioner for Peace and Security said it was an opportunity for both sides to iron out issues of security, especially as they affect Africa.

Lamamra said that Libya topped the agenda of the meeting because of the continued security situation the crisis posed to Africa and the rest of the world.

He said the outcome of the meeting would be made public at a joint press briefing by the two parties after the deliberations.

15 countries of the AU PSC, including Nigeria, are representing the commission at the joint consultative meeting.

The AU will organise a mini summit of the AU Heads of States and Governments on Libya next week. (NAN)
