(May 25, 2011, Bahir Dar City)- United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon paid a visit to the Amhara State of Ethiopia on Thursday.
Visiting health workers in the state, Ban highlighted the progress the country has made in improving the health of women and children.
“We have seen so many women and children dying needlessly from preventable diseases,” he told reporters at the Ambomesk health post in Bahir Dar City. “Training good health workers and midwives can save a lot of women and children’s lives.”
At the health post, the Secretary General met with the staff providing essential services to communities.
He also visited a larger health centre, a few kilometers away, which supports the health post by providing it with supplies and on-the-job training.
There he spoke with doctors and nurses about their work, as well as with some patients.
The Secretary General commended Ethiopia on its commitment to improving maternal and child health, including its goal of quadrupling the number of midwives.The country is a good example of how a little investment can go a long way in saving many lives, he added.
He called on Prime Minister Meles Zenawi to brief world leaders and G20 memberstates on Ethiopia’s success story in the infrastructure and health sectors.
On arrival at Bahir Dar Airport, Ban was welcomed by Ethiopian Minister of Health, Dr. Tewodros Adhanom; chief of the Amhara State, Ayalew Gobeze ;and other senior Ethiopian government officials.
