Ethiopia among top ten peacekeeping force contributor counties: Report

Addis Ababa, April 15, 2011 (Addis Ababa, ENA) - Global Peace Operations Report said Ethiopia is one of top ten counties in contributing peacekeeping force to global mission.

At the launching of Global Peace Operations 2011 Review Report at Goethe Institute here on Thursday Ethiopia has so far sent 2,368 peacekeeping force to mission.

According to the report, Egypt, Nigeria, Rwanda and Ghana among African countries rank third, fourth, seventh and eighth respectively.

Vice Counselor at the Embassy of Germany in Ethiopia, Michael Biontino on the occasion said UN peacekeeping force would extend its activity for Africa.

He said UN missions have carried out their mandates in Côte d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo and Sudan.

The deputy head said lack of political commitment and finance has made the mission challenging in Africa and in other parts of the world.

However, the growing support from different countries is enabling to carry out missions effectively.
The deputy head said the annual review report is officiated for the first time in Africa in Ethiopia.

According to the report, Africa constitutes 73.4 percent of the UN peacekeepers while the Middle East and, Central and South America make up 15.4 and 10.2 percent respectively.

The report indicated that there is a strong need to extend the mission in Côte d'Ivoire, Haiti and Somalia.
Over all peacekeeping grew by 32 percent in 2010 with 256,170 peacekeepers compared with 194,379 in 2009,the report said
