(March 31, 2011,Addis Ababa, ENA)-- The Third International Steering Committee Meeting of the 16th International Conference on AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections in Africa (ICASA) opened here on Thursday.
The ICASA Conference is held from 4-8 December 2011 under the theme: “Own, Scale-Up and Sustain” here in Addis Ababa, capital of Africa, which will host (ICASA) this year.
The International Steering Committee has begun relevant discussion on the over-all activities made by the Secretariat over the last seven months. The meeting will discuss and review ICASA 2011 preparation progress and Conference programs.
Brainstorming on plenary topics and speakers and obtaining feedbacks and suggestions on the overall strategy of ICASA 2011 conference operations are some of the objectives of the meeting.
Opening the meeting, President of ICASA, Dr. Yigeremu Abebe said the Secretariat is working hard for the success of the Conference. Six million US dollars is needed to cover the costs of the Conference, he said, adding, so far one million US dollars is secured.
Some 10,000 delegates from around the world including scientists, health workers, policy makers, people living with HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections, among others, are expected to attend the conference.
President of Society for AIDS in Africa (SAA), Prof. Robert Soudre on his part said Ethiopia was selected to host the 16th ICASA Conference. This is not the first time for Ethiopia to host ICASA, he said.
ICASA is one of the major international AIDS conferences taking place in Africa. Its current biennial hosting alternates between the Anglophone and Francophone African courtiers. The conference will also continue its deliberation on Friday.
