Addis Ababa, February 19, 2011 (Addis Ababa, ENA) - Commemoration day of martyrs, who were massacred by Fascist Italian troops 74 years ago during the second Italian invasion to Ethiopia, was marked on Saturday at the Martyrs' Square in Addis Ababa City.

Deputy City Mayor, Kefyalew Azeze on the occasion stressed the need for all Ethiopians to protect the country from enemies as ancient patriots did.

Kefyalew said while commemorating the martyrs efforts should be exerted to repeat the victory of ancient patriots in the development sector with a view to making sustainable the economic growth registered in the country during the past seven years.

He also called on youth to contribute share in the efforts to enable the country become one of middle income countries and achieve the five-year Growth and Transformation Plan through drawing lessons from the sacrifices paid by the patriots to safeguard sovereignty of the country.

Ancient Ethiopian Patriots' Association President, Astatke Abate on his part said generations should protect the country from enemies as the ancient patriots did.

The President also stressed the need for generations to engage in development activities and reduce poverty.

Abraha Deboch and Moges Asgedom attempted to kill the Italian general, Marshal Rudolfo Graziani by using grenades. Graziani, who survived the attack, ordered his troops to massacre residents of Addis Ababa City. Accordingly, over 4000 residential houses were burnt to ash and a number of people were killed.

The First Italo-Ethiopian War, Adwa was fought between Italy and Ethiopia from 1895 to 1896.

The Ethiopian army defeated the invading Italian army on March 1, 1896.

Ethiopia's military victory over Italy secured it the distinction of being the only African nation to successfully resist European colonialism with a decisive show of force.
